I just realized I have not posted a ‘Mikey’ since April 14th, and would not have noticed the lapse if I didn’t have to actually scroll back through the archives to get my record. April was also the 6 month anniversary of the last time Brandon posted anything on this site. For those who may be new to Al Davis Plus the Point I call my sports bets ‘Mikey’s, because much as they had mentioned in the fantastic film Swingers, Mikey is fucking money. I must say, I have enjoyed wild success since I started to post ‘Mikey’s, but that will change this weekend. Not only have I not shopped around the lines for the ‘best value’, I also really have nothing to go of for every single one of these teams. Where the NFL has preseason so you can get a pretty good idea of where a team is at, the first week of the NCAA season is usually dominant teams playing ‘warm up’ games in which they’ll win by 50… lines in which I usually do not want to touch. These are also more dangerous because I rarely bet on baseball or NBA basketball so therefore the first few weekends I need a gambling overload taking anything that seems remotely winnable. A veritable bukkake of bets. And with that, here are the bets.

NCAA Football

Akron (+33.5) over # 18 THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY - is this a dumb bet? Possibly. The game is in Columbus and the Zips are playing a team with something to prove. The problem is, with all the suspensions and added emotions from Tattoo Gate I find it hard to believe OSU beats an offensive minded Akron team by 5 touchdowns.

Akron/#18 THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY over 46 - this is a bit of hedging on my part. I think Akron covers. But if they don’t it means OSU is putting up at least 34 points, but as I aforementioned I think Akron puts up a few scores therefore raising OSU’s total if they cover. And if Akron keep things interesting I think they hit 46 easy.

Kent State/#2 ALABAMA over 47 - Bama is also -38 in this game, which I find wildly enticing but will not touch. Bama is trying out a new quarterback but it does not change that they are one of the strongest teams in the country playing a team in the Golden Flashes that are whipping boy in the MAC. I think Bama puts up 47 by themselves.

#1 OKLAHOMA (-24.5) over Tulsa - Tulsa is not a whipping boy, that being said I also think Oklahoma is of the the three best team in the nation. At home I look for Oklahoma to come out strong, the only thing I am concerned about in this bet is a late garbage cover by Tulsa while OK has their second team in.

#5 Boise State (-3) over #19 GEORGIA - I am not telling any tales out of school here when I say that in the past I did not think Boise State deserves a title shot. Now that they are in the Mountain West with TCU and playing an SEC team to open the season, I think that conversation changes. I think the Broncos are still pissed at the way last season ended with Nevada and want to come out showing they’re BCS contenders. Also when it comes down to it in a field goal spread I will take Kellen Moore over an overrated at 19 Georgia team all day.

#4 LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY (+4) over #3 Oregon - there really is no home team here seeing as the game is going to be playing in Dallas, but Texas is a lot closer to Louisiana than Oregon. I retract my earlier statement - this is my dumbest bet of the day. The truth is, I do not trust either of these teams to win by more than a field goal so I take the points. On one side of the coin I don’t trust Les Miles as a coach in big games, and on the other LSU is a physical team that I think will beat the shit out of Oregon slowing them down significantly (a la Auburn last year). I honestly believe we could not ask for a better night game to open up the 2011 college football season, and I am excited to get the season started and lose big chunks of my paycheck to offshore gambling sites.
