Every third person in Title Town seems to be freaking out about the Packers moves, or lack there of, in this year’s NFL Trade/Free Agent Bukkake. I guess my main question for those people is - why? Because we refuse to go out and overpay for free agents? What the casual NFL fan fails to realize is that free agency is just as (if not more, depending on the GM) dicey as the draft… just more expensive. Why do you think they coined the term, ‘contract year’. I would not want to call out anyone specific here, but a prime example is that fat piece of human garbage Albert Haynesworth. When he wasn’t viciously stomping on skulls with his cleats he was sacking the quarterback and being a general nuisance in NFL backfields. Then he got paid. This was almost immediately followed by a myriad of failed conditioning tests, personnel issues and being genuinely useless as a lineman/human being.
This is something the Packers, more specifically, GM Ted Thompson have avoided. Under Teddy T the Pack has been fairly quiet on the free agency front (sans Charles Woodson) and have built through the draft. This seems to be working out pretty well for Green Bay as last year the Packers were the second youngest team in the NFL (to Carolina) and won the Super Bowl. Ask Rick Spielman or Dan Snyder how building through free agency is going. I was recently asked by a friend who works for the Vikings if the Packers were going to make any big moves, or stay ‘boring and efficient’?
By not spending ludicrous amounts of money on free agents the Packer now have leniency to give contracts to Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews, BJ Raji, Jermichael Finley, Greg Jennings, Tramon Williams and any of the other Pro Bowl quality players that Ted Thompson drafted. So yes, the Packers will stay boring, efficient… and World Champions.
