EVERYONE FREAK OUT AND YELL IRRATIONALLY!
I no longer live in Wisconsin so I really can not say for sure, but judging by the facebook and Twitter machine posts I have been seeing, I am forced to assume that the above sentence is what is being yelled in the streets of Milwaukee while people tip over cars and burn down buildings. The Brewers have dropped six of their last nine, watched the division lead drop to 5.5 games, and a few poorly timed stories have Milwaukee fans hitting the panic button. But not me.
Yuniesky Betancourt is useless! KRod is unhappy! Prince Fielder is leaving! Most people would say that these are headlines that are popping up this week, but who among us did not already know? I have made no secret in print and spoken word that Yuniesky Betancourt is the worst starting shortstop in baseball… he has done nothing this season to discredit any part of that statement. The Brewers were on KRod’s ‘no trade list’ that Scott Boras forgot to hand into the Mets before the deadline and was unhappy coming over here to begin with. What do you think happens when the guy with a ‘games finished clause’ in his contract who holds the Major League record for saves in a single season plays second fiddle to a second year string bean with a mustache? And Prince. Oh, Princey. Even though I have tried to argue against, and as much as I would love the Crew to sign him we have seen the writing on the wall since his first day in The Show. Everyone in baseball has been counting down the days until he was done with salary arbitration because we all knew he was gone. So why the freak out?
I was talking today with The Bucky Channel’s Bart Winkler about this, people need to realize slumps happen in a baseball season. Granted, the last two playoffs pushes the Brewers have decided to wait until mid-September to shit the bed, but it happens. Were people in Philadelphia taking to the streets when in August the Phillies lost seven of 10 and the Braves got within 4.5? No… well probably, that city blows and the fans are all assholes. But the point is, they have confidence and understand that it is just something every good team goes through. The Brewers start a six game road trip against the Reds (73-76) and Cubs (65-84) and then end the season with six at home against the Marlins (67-81) and Pirates (67-82). See a trend there? It is four teams under .500, three with only 60-odd wins on the season and the Cardinals start a four game set against the Phillies tonight. The Crew has a magic number of eight (hell, if they have a magic number of five going into the last homestand I would be confident). It may be a dogfight, but am I worried about it? No, because the Brewers are in the driver’s seat, they don’t have to hope that a team drops a game here or they get a lucky break there. If they go out and take care of their business against beatable teams (like they can with that offense and pitching) Milwaukee has nothing to worry about. And their fans should do the same. Slumps happen in baseball. Trust the team. Keep calm and carry on.
